Your Voice: Restaurants in Springfield that need to make a comeback

There are a lot of hometown favorites that make us sad whenever they decide to shut their doors for good. Recently, we told you about some of the restaurants in the greater Springfield area that closed during 2017, and our readers left plenty of comments on Facebook reminding us of some other great eateries we've lost in the past.

Here are some of the most missed places you wish would re-open to the public.

Michael’s Steakhouse

This local favorite that was located on Vester Road specialized in steaks, but many people came for the cookies after the meal.

“They were baking them all of the time so they were hot when you got them,” Jan said on Facebook. The restaurant’s salad bar was also something to write home about.

Red Barn

This restaurant was a chain that was actually founded in Springfield back in 1961. At its peak, there were between 300-400 restaurants in 19 states across the U.S., some parts of Canada and even Australia. Ultimately, ownership of the company changed hands many times and many of the franchise licenses were allowed to expire. The last Red Barn in the country operates under the name “The Farm” and is in Racine, Wisconsin.

Klosterman’s Derr Road Inn

According to past reviews across many sites, Klosterman’s Derr Road Inn was well-liked for its quiet and relaxing ambience, as well as the great view from certain areas of the dining room. Patrons were also able to feed wild deer from a manger at the location.

Taya’s sentiment of “Bring back Readmore Pizza!” seems to be one a lot of people can get behind. The food and atmosphere was famous among Springfielders and the pizza used to be some of the best in town.

Some chain restaurants people miss include:

  • Perkin's Restaurant and Bakery
  • Shoney's
  • Denny's
  • Chi Chi's Mexican Restaurant
  • Sonic (in Urbana)

Clarification: A previous version of this article did not clearly express the area in which the Sonic Drive-In restaurant had closed.
