Wittenberg first D-III team to reach 20 wins this season

The No. 3 Wittenberg Tigers reached another milestone in their perfect season, beating Kenyon 78-63 on Wednesday at Pam Evans Smith Arena for their 20th victory.

Wittenberg (20-0, 13-0) became the first NCAA Division III team to reach 20 wins this season. No. 1 Whitman (19-0) plays Thursday night.

Mitch Balser scored 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Chad Roy scored 17 points and made 6 of 7 shots from the field.

Jordan Pumroy and Landon Martin each scored nine. Jake Bertemes and Connor Seipel had eight points each.

The Tigers shot 49.1 percent from the field and held the Lords to 32.8 percent shooting. Wittenberg made 7 of 18 3-pointers (38.9 percent), while Kenyon made 6 of 25 (24 percent). Wittenberg swept the season series. The Tigers won the first game 87-67 on Jan. 3 at Kenyon.

With five games remaining in the regular season, Wittenberg has a three-game lead in the North Coast Athletic Conference over Wooster (16-4, 10-3). Ohio Wesleyan (14-6, 9-4) dropped from a tie for second to third place with an 83-62 loss Wednesday at Denison (11-9, 7-6).

Wittenberg plays at Oberlin (9-11, 3-10) at 3 p.m. Saturday. Wittenberg beat Oberlin 78-65 in Springfield in its NCAC opener on Nov. 29.
