Winchester’s career night leads Wright State to first win

Freshman forward Everett Winchester led four players in double figures with a career-high 18 points as Wright State pulled away from Division-II Tiffin for a 73-49 victory Monday, its first win of the season.

Senior wing Grant Benzinger had 11 points, reaching 1,000 for his career. Senior point guard Justin Mitchell, returning from a one-game suspension, had 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in 33 minutes.

Freshman guard Jaylon Hall had 12 for Wright State (1-3).

The Raiders built a 40-22 halftime lead but had trouble putting Tiffin away. They made only one of their first seven second-half shots, and the Dragons (1-2) went on a 12-2 run to make it 42-34 and force coach Scott Nagy to burn a timeout with 16:01 to go.

Winchester stopped the bleeding with a drive with 14:40 to go. Tiffin cut it to seven with a 3-pointer, but Benzinger connected from beyond the arc at 13:46 — reaching his career milestone — to push the margin to 47-37. And the Dragons never got within single digits again.
