West Liberty-Salem beats Madeira, advances regional semifinals

West Liberty-Salem High School running back Holden Nease scored on a 35-yard touchdown in the third quarter and the Tigers held on to beat Cincinnati Madeira 21-14 in a Division V, Region 20 quarterfinal game on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium.

Nease rushed for 150 yards on 28 carries for the Tigers, who improved to 10-1. Trevor Woodruff went 18-for-26 for 205 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers won their first postseason game since 2015.

The Tigers led 7-0 in the first quarter after Woodruff hit Nick Burden on a 25-yard TD pass. The senior QB scored on a 1-yard run to give WL-S a 14-0 lead at the half.

The Mustangs pulled to within seven after Madeira’s Cannon Shafer returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown.

After Nease’s score made it 21-14, Madeira quarterback Sam Autry found Vincent Englert on a 5-yard TD pass to pull the Mustangs within one score, but they couldn’t get any closer.

Autry went 22-for-44 for 151 yards and a TD for the Mustangs (8-3).

The fourth-seeded Tigers advanced to face top-seeded Cincinnati Taft ( at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.
