Two-sport standout Moss focused on leading Wildcats on gridiron

Raheim Moss is the latest in a long line of two-sport stars at Springfield High School. The Wildcats senior led the basketball team in scoring last season, and this fall he’s in the spotlight as the quarterback for Springfield’s unbeaten football team.

So it begs the question. Is Moss a football player playing basketball or the other way around?

“I’m a football player that plays basketball,” Moss said during a break in practice this week. “I really don’t know what I’m going to do in college, this year is actually going to decide that. I’m just worried about getting the job done for football right now.”

Moss and the Wildcats are well on their way to getting back to the playoffs this season. Moss showed up for summer camp as a linebacker who occasionally caught passes on offense, but when the season started, he was taking snaps and trying not to be tackled rather than being taken down.

“I just want to do what’s best for my team and whatever they need me to play I will play it,” Moss said.

Moss said he hasn’t played quarterback since he was a freshman, but the senior knows what it takes to be a leader on either side of the ball, or in any sport.

“There’s going to be a lot of pressure on you during a game, a lot people yelling at you because you’re the man of the team,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s just how you take it and move on.”

Most of Moss’ college offers are for football, but Cincinnati wants him to play both sports. He won’t play quarterback at the next level, but right now he’s enjoying the opportunity.

“Every week I’m trying to get better at something,” Moss said. “Just to show each team that we play that I can do this and I can do that. I can run, I can pass, and I can make other players that aren’t getting a lot of touches better.”

Springfield has a tradition of two-sport stars. Danny Davis was all-state in both sports before heading to Wisconsin to play football. Last year’s quarterback Leonard Taylor was also a beast shooting baskets, but he ended up playing tight end at UC.

“Really I’m just trying to do my own thing,” Moss said. “I’m trying to be better than whoever came through Springfield. I just want to make plays in both sports. I just want to be an athlete … and make plays.”
