HS Roundup 5/24: Defending state champ CJ returns to regional tourney

Nick Wissman powered defending Division II state champion Chaminade Julienne in a 7-2 win versus Wyoming on Friday, booking a return trip to the regional tournament for the Eagles.

It also marks a third consecutive district championship for CJ baseball.

Wissman struck out seven in a complete game, recording the win and driving in two runs to help his cause.

Andrew Simones went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored and Sebastian Gongora, Jacob Hieatt and Dylan Snyder each had one RBI.

Chaminade Julienne will face Granville at Mason on Thursday to start the regional tournament.

District Tournament

Cin. Christian 3, Tri-County North 1: Cin. Christian held off a late bases-loaded TCN rally to return to the regional tournament. Cin. Christian will play Russia on Thursday at Wittenberg.

Franklin 11, Fenwick 2: With the win Franklin returns to the regional tournament for the first time since 2013. Franklin will face Ross on Thursday at Mason.

Minster 11, New Bremen 2: Minster pulled away after a close start, scoring 10 unanswered runs to win in the district final. Minster will face Mechanicsburg on Thursday at Springfield.

Turpin 6, Badin 5: Turpin scored four runs in the seventh inning to rally for a first ever district title. It ended a 20 game win streak for Badin.

Boys Tennis

State Tournament

Sainandan Dore of Springboro and Pierce Elliott of Preble Shawnee advanced to Saturday’s semifinal rounds. In Division I Dore fought past Yukan Wang of Mayfield in three sets in the first round of play before advancing 6-3 6-3 versus Reece Yakubov of Col. St. Charles in the second round. In Division II Elliott defeated Noah Brown of Bellville Clear Fork 6-3 6-0 in the first round and Drew Haffer 6-1 7-5 in the second round.
