Reds sign relief pitcher to two-year deal

The Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday announced the signing of relief pitcher Jared Hughes to a two-year deal with a club option for 2020.

Hughes, 32, has a 2.85 ERA over seven seasons and 380 relief appearances with the Pirates (2011-16) and Brewers (2017). The 6-foot-7 right-hander had a 3.02 ERA in 67 games last season with Milwaukee.

Hughes has limited opponents to a .252 batting average and 27 home runs in 369 innings. He ranks 12th among all Major League relievers since 2011 with a 61.4 percent ground ball rate. He’s stranded 180 of the 236 baserunners he has inherited over his career.

Hughes reached the postseason with the Pirates in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
