Reds designate Cabrera, Sampson for assignment; bring in catcher, OF

The Reds announced Monday the acquisition of a pair of players while removing two more from the 40-man roster.

Going out are Ramon Cabrera, who served as the team’s No. 2 catcher last season, and Keyvius Sampson, a right-handed pitcher who split his time between the big club and Triple-A.

They were designated for assignment after the team claimed catcher Juan Graterol from the Angels and outfielder Gabriel Guerrero from the Diamondbacks.

Guerrero is the nephew of former Expos and Angels great Vladimir Guerrero according to MiLB.com.

A 22-year-old right-handed hitter, he split last season between Double-AA and Triple-A, posting a .234 batting average with nin homers and 54 RBIs.

Graterol is a 27-year-old right-handed hitter who made his major-league debut last season and logged four hits in nine games.

He batted .270 in 11 minor-league seasons after signing with the Royals as a 17-year-old free agent.
