Hartsock: Five high school football games you can’t miss in Week 3

Week 3 of the high school football season finds two local teams facing off against defending state champions and a south-of-town showdown that we don’t normally see very often.

Here are five games to watch Friday night:

Alter (1-1) at Centerville (0-2)

Let’s start with the Knights against the Elks. Alter owns the all-time series record 3-2. The Elks won the last time they played in 2010.

The Knights bounced back from a season-opening loss with a 51-6 win over Thurgood Marshall. Centerville dropped a 20-14 decision to Lakota West.

The Elks are playing their third straight home game. Alter is playing a Friday night game for the first time after opening the season with back-to-back Thursday games.

Pickerington Central (2-0) at Trotwood (1-1)

This one matches two defending state champions. Pickerington Central won the Division I title last season and its lone loss came in Week 3 against Trotwood.

The Rams had their 16-game winning streak end at home last Friday. Trotwood was pounded by Chicago Simeon 33-6.

Akron Hoban (2-0) at Wayne (2-0)

Wayne has rolled over its first two opponents by a combined score of 98-26. The starters have been out early but that probably won’t be the case this week.

Hoban destroyed Winton Woods in the Division II championship game last season. Hoban beat St. Ignatius 21-14 in the opener and followed that up with a 42-13 win at Youngstown Mooney last Friday.

This will be Hoban’s third straight road game and the third in a row at home for Wayne.

Middletown Madison (2-0) at Valley View (1-1)

The Spartans get the home field for the first time this season. Bob Skidmore’s team came up short 27-24 at Fort Recovery last Friday.

Madison’s defense hasn’t allowed a point in their first two games of the season, outscoring opponents 68-0.

Cade Cradlebaugh leads the Spartans in both passing and rushing after two games.

Cameron Svarda will be back on both sides of the ball this week for Madison. The senior, who rushed for 1,940 yards and 26 touchdowns last season, sprained an ankle in the opener and only played defense last week in the Mohawks’ 46-0 win over Reading.

Twin Valley South (1-1) at Tri-County North (1-1)

It’s the backyard battle out in Preble County and one thing you know for sure, the Panthers are going to win.

Tri-County lost by four at home to Brookville in Week 1 then bounced back to beat Ansonia 34-21 last Friday.

Twin Valley handled Dixie in the opener before being doubled up on the scoreboard 30-15 last week at home against Preble Shawnee.

Tune it to Touchdown 7 at 11:13 Friday night for all of the scores and highlights from around the Miami Valley.
