Hewitt joined the Bengals in 2014 as an undrafted free agent and signed a three-year extension in August of 2016 but saw his playing time diminish through each of his four seasons. In 60 career games with 37 starts, Hewitt has logged 22 catches for 220 yards and is known best for his blocking ability.
The 27-year-old didn’t seem to fit into Bill Lazor’s new offense, however, and now he’ll bring his knowledge of the Bengals’ system to Indianapolis as the Colts game-plan for the regular-season opener against Cincinnati on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Bengals began their own preparations Monday with all but one of their available players dressed for practice. Wide receiver Cody Core, who the Bengals elected not to place on injured/reserve, was the only one absent.
Among notable participants who had been dealing with injuries, linebacker Vinny Rey (ankle) and left tackle Cordy Glenn (shoulder) were both dressed Monday. Glenn was injured at Buffalo in the third preseason game and was one of the few players who did not at least dress out for the finale against the Colts on Thursday.
