Pittsburgh Steelers safety Mike Mitchell will be out close to $60,000 because of fines for illegal hits against the Kansas City Chiefs.
It was originally reported that he would be fined nearly $49,000 for a late hit against Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, that he was flagged for during the game. That hit will actually only cost him just over $9,000. Mitchell’s big fine is for a hit on Chiefs running back Charcandrick West, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
West had broken Steelers linbacker Ryan Shazier’s tackle, and was being held up by cornerback Mike Hilton, when Mitchell rammed the crown of his helmet directly into West’s helmet. The Chiefs’ running back had to leave the game and is still in concussion protocol.
He could not take the field for the Chiefs on Thursday night against the Oakland Raiders.
These fines are clearly the NFL trying to send a message to Mitchell. He is going to have to make some changes quickly, or a good portion of his $5 million salary will be going towards fines.
