Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Vincenzo Williams had a bit of an odd proclamation to make on Twitter on Monday afternoon.
“Steelers don’t do beef,” Williams wrote. “We’re vegan.”
A bit of easy reading between the lines here says that this message is for wide receiver Martavis Bryant.
There have been talks that Bryant wants a trade. He has denied them. On Sunday, he only had one catch for three yards against the Cincinnati Bengals. After the game, he went on social media and ripped into rookie wideout Juju Smith-Schuster.
“JuJu is no where near better than me, fool,” Bryant said. “All they need to do is give me what I want and y’all can have JuJu and whoever else.”
On Monday morning, Bryant was nowhere to be found at the team meeting. His agent said he was sick and went to the doctor.
Being sick helped him avoid a potentially awkward conversation with Smith-Schuster, but maybe he doesn’t have to worry. After all, Smith-Schuster said the two are in a good place and didn’t seem too insulted by Bryant’s outburst.
In short, while Bryant has technically denied the trade requests and has presented a viable excuse for missing the meeting – he also deleted the social media posts – it’s clear that some relationships are on the rocks here. Williams may simply be trying to tell Bryant that they don’t care, they just want to win, and they’ll welcome him back no matter what.
