Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Eli Rogers was the team’s third-leading receiver in 2016.
However, he has spent the last two weeks on the Steelers’ inactives list. He fumbled a punt against the Chicago Bears in Week 3 that contributed to a loss. According to coach Mike Tomlin and Rogers, that is the reason for him being on the inactives list.
“He was just saying he was giving me time to focus in on my details on punt return and being technically sound,” Rogers said to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ed Bouchette. “To my knowledge, it’s nothing on offense.”
However, Bouchette is not totally sold on that. He believes that a some poor route running was also part of the problem.
Rogers is in a completely different wide receiver group than he was last season. In 2016, he was competing with Cobi Hamilton, Darius Heyward-Bey and a banged up Sammie Coates for most of the year. This season, Martavis Bryant has returned from suspension and JuJu Smith-Schuster was a second-round draft pick.
With those options, for Rogers to stay on the field he is going to have do it by being a dependable option week in and week out.
