Robert Griffin III apparently had more than one chance to return to the NFL in 2017.
In an appearance on ESPN’s SC6, Griffin claims that he turned down offers to join the Arizona Cardinals and Baltimore Ravens last offseason.
“I had interest in the offseason,” Griffin said (via Yahoo Sports). “It just wasn’t the right fit and I had to make that decision for myself to say, ‘Look, if I don’t accept this offer, there’s a chance I won’t play football this year.’ And I would talk to my family, and I was OK with that, OK with the fact that it might happen.
“I love football. I miss the game. I am ready. So I haven’t given up on 2017 yet. There are some teams that need help and may need help going into the playoffs.”
Griffin went on to explain that the Cardinals already had three quarterbacks on their roster, and the Ravens wanted him to play in a preseason game with very little time to prepare.
The 2011 Heisman Trophy winner from Baylor University was once one of the most promising young players in the league. But thanks to a rash of injuries, some immaturity issues, and a handful of personality conflicts, Griffin’s NFL career has turned into a cautionary tale for future quarterback prospects.
Griffin entered the NFL with the Washington Redskins as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. He took the league by storm in his first professional season, guiding the Redskins to the NFC Playoffs, winning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award along the way.
Unfortunately, Griffin’s rookie season would prove to be the highlight of his NFL career. He suffered a knee injury at the end of his first season in Washington, and everything snowballed from there.
He eventually lost his starting job to Kirk Cousins, and was released by the Redskins, who traded a king’s ransom to acquire him, following the 2015 season.
He signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, and won their starting job to open the season. He got bit by the injury bug again in Cleveland, resulting in him making just five starts for the Browns, going 1-4, before being released after the 2016 season.
