Rex Ryan low blows New York Giants QB Geno Smith on ESPN

ESPN hired Rex Ryan with the hope that he’d do and say things that drew attention to a struggling pregame show and they got their wish on Sunday when the former New York Jets and Buffalo Bills took aim at New York Giants quarterback Geno Smith.

Ryan delivered a low blow by using a marshmallow as a prop and comparing it to Smith’s chin. When Ryan was in Buffalo, he famously signed IK Enemkpali after he was released by the Jets for punching Smith in the mouth and breaking his jaw.

Then, to further instigate, Ryan named Enemkpali a captain when the Bills played the Jets later that season. That incident was largely behind Smith, who started last week and is backing up Eli Manning on Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys.

However, Ryan bashed the Giants for starting Smith and trashed his former quarterback, which elicited this response from Smith.

“I did see one of my ex-coaches say he didn’t want me to be his quarterback, and that really upset me, you know?” Smith said according to Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post. “A guy that we saved his job in 2013, when we fought our ass for him both years. For him to go and say that shows how much of a coward he is.”

Ryan’s comments appear to be inspired by that statement from Smith and this rivalry doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
