Report claims that Chris Jones’ fake punt was even more stunning than you thought

Dallas Cowboys punter Chris Jones ran a fake punt with the game tied near the end of the third quarter. The Cowboys needed a spark to help them beat the Oakland Raiders and perhaps save their season, and he provided one in spades.

It was shocking at the time because he caught the ball at his own 10-yard line. This isn’t like running the fake from your opponent’s side of the field. And they weren’t losing. It wasn’t desperation in that sense. The game was tied at 10. If that punt fails, it basically gifts the Raiders three to seven points and the lead with the fourth quarter about to start.

If you thought that took guts for the coaching staff, it’s even more impressive than that. Reports on Monday morning claim that Jones himself called the fake. In other words, it was a real punt as called by Jason Garrett and company. Jones just liked what he saw, figured he had nothing to lose, and took off.

“This was not a call from coach Jason Garrett, this was Jones using the keys they practice on all week and him deciding to take off,” reported Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram. “Jones said he has the green light to take off [if] he sees the defense lined up a certain way. He said the fact that the Cowboys were backed up in their own territory didn’t make a difference.”

“We work on everything,” Jones noted. “The guys up front. They did their job. We were able to keep another possession alive. You’ve got to trust it. It was there. We practice it. We got what we wanted and took advantage.”
