Paxton Lynch will play for Denver Broncos at some point in final two games

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph wasn’t ready to name a starting quarterback when he met with the media on Monday afternoon. He did, however, reveal that the team wants second-year pro Paxton Lynch to play at some point during the team’s final two games of the season.

“Brock [Osweiler] played well [against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 15],” Joseph explained. “It would be hard to say he didn’t play well. It’s proof in the film there, but we have a lot of things going on as far as the quarterback deal. We want to see Paxton play some, so that’s the truth. We have to see where he is as a player moving into the offseason – that’s important for our football team moving forward. We have to discuss it. Again, we want to make sure he is totally healthy so he can play and play well if he does play. Again, Brock did play well. That’s going to be a discussion that we have to have with our staff today to figure out what’s best for all parties involved.”

If you read between the lines there, it’s clear that the only thing keeping Joseph from naming Lynch the team’s starter for the remainder of the season is Osweiler’s outstanding performance in Denver’s 25-13 win over the Colts last Thursday night.

In relief of Trevor Siemian, who suffered a partially dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder in the first quarter against Indianapolis, Osweiler completed 12-of-17 passes (70.59%) for 194 yards, 2 touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 147.7. He also added 17 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.

While Osweiler undoubtedly earned the right to start for the Broncos against the Washington Redskins in Week 16, the harsh reality of the situation is that life in the NFL isn’t always fair. The Denver front office and coaching staff has to see what they have in Lynch before going into the offseason and spending big money on a free agent quarterback or investing an early pick in yet another signal caller in the 2018 NFL Draft.
