Tom Brady and the New England Patriots need production out of Danny Amendola this season more than ever with Julian Edelman out for the season. So it’s no coincidence that Brady is serving up confidence boosters for Amendola.
“He’s had such a great year,” Brady said, according to Ryan Hannable of WEEI. “I can’t say enough good things about Danny and everything he’s meant to our offense. He’s so tough. To me, he’s just uncoverable. You turn on the tape, he’s getting away from people, no matter what the route, no matter who’s on him, the leverage, distance of the route. He’s just been so great for us this year, and I’m going to try to keep finding him.
“When you have that kind of trust, and you see it play after play after play, as a quarterback, you want the ball to go to the guy who’s open. Danny’s open.”
That’s lofty words from one of the best quarterbacks of all time about a guy who was on the roster bubble entering training camp.
Brady’s praise is good for Amendola’s morale. The 5-foot-11 slot receiver’s registered 23 catches for 267 yards to go with 1 touchdown this season. His 23 receptions are good enough for fourth on the team.
What’s most important is his chemistry with Brady. The Patriots run a lot of option routes in which it’s extremely important for quarterback and receiver to be on the same page. Amendola’s done an adequate job at filling the void left by Edelman. The Patriots and Brady hope that it will continue.
