Patriots star explains why he’s thrilled they signed WR Kenny Britt

The New England Patriots signed wide receiver Kenny Britt, and safety Devin McCourty was asked exactly what he thought of bringing in the free agent so close to the end of the year.

“He’s a Rutgers guy,” said McCourty in an interview posted by ESPN’s Mike Reiss. “So we need to expand on that. We know what that means.”

McCourty went to Rutgers, as well. He played there with Britt. That was a long time ago now, as McCourty was drafted in 2010 and Britt was drafted in 2009, then by the Tennessee Titans.

“He’s a good guy,” McCourty continued. “A joy to be around. Always upbeat. Always smiling ear to ear. Physical guy. Obviously a big-bodied guy. You know, I’m excited for him and the opportunity to come here and try to catch on.”

Britt gives the Patriots something they have been missing at the wideout spot, as a big, powerful player who can be a redzone threat. The Patriots thrive with smaller, faster wideouts in many cases, and they have tight end Rob Gronkowski to help provide that big touchdown target, but this gives them yet another dimension. They may feel they need it after Gronkowski got suspended and they lost to the Miami Dolphins.

That said, does McCourty think Britt will be able to step right in and help?

“Obviously it’s tough when you come [at] this point in the year,” he said. “Just trying to learn as much as possible and get out there. [But] it’s always exciting to have a guy you played with in college as a teammate in the NFL.”
