The New England Patriots run a complex offense. Some players are quickly exiled from New England for not catching on the system. That’s not the case for wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
Cooks’ 537 receiving yards through 7 weeks ranks third in the NFL. He’s join Randy Moss and Wes Welker as the only three wide receivers to eclipse 500 yards in their first seven games with the Patriots.
It’s not a coincidence that Cooks has made a seamless transition with the Patriots.
“He works hard, very diligent, tough, durable, a smart guy that will do whatever you ask him to do,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said about Cooks, according to Rich Hill of Pats Pulpit. “Whatever you ask him to do he wants to know exactly how you want it done. He tries to do it that way. He’s a pleasure to coach.”
“Brandin’s got great speed, but Brandin does a lot of things really well – not only speed, quickness and such a smart player,” Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said about the receiver. “I’ve loved having the opportunity to work with him. We’re still growing, I would say, and still working to find ways to get him the ball more often. I mean, he’s done such a great job for us this year. It’s just been really fun working with him.”
Brady’s assessment that the two are still growing will make opponents cringe. Cooks is the best deep threat in New England since Moss and he provides the Patriots with a legit No. 1 wide receiver on the outside.
