The New England Patriots have signed former New York Giants tight end Will Tye to their practice squad, according to a report from Doug Kyed of NESN.com.
Tye was in for a workout on Wednesday and was in uniform at practice on Thursday. He’ll add some additional depth behind Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen and Jacob Hollister at tight end.
The former Florida State and Stony Brook tight end spent two seasons as a regular starter with the Giants and was a PFWA All-Rookie Team selection in 2015. He caught 90 passes for 859 yards and 4 touchdowns in two seasons, but was cut on the final day of roster cuts in 2017.
The New York Jets claimed him off waivers just before the start of the season. He played in a trio of games and made 4 catches for 38 yards before he was released on Oct. 3.
On the Patriots practice squad, Tye is still eligible to be signed to anybody else’s 53-man roster. And he’ll be a prime candidate for elevation in the event that anybody ahead of him on the New England depth chart gets dinged up.
