NFL owner says Jerry Jones had no influence whatsoever on Roger Goodell’s contract

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones certainly tried to influence Roger Goodell’s new contract extension. He didn’t like the timing or the fact that the Compensation Committee was able to make decisions without consulting all of the owners. There was a time when he even threatened to sue if things didn’t go his way.

He eventually backed off and insinuated that things were moving the way he wanted. After the recent owners meeting, though, others have said he didn’t really have an impact.

“Atlanta owner Arthur Blank says Jerry Jones ‘was no factor’ on incentive-laden extension commissioner Roger Goodell wound up signing,” wrote David Moore of the Dallas Morning News. “Blank also says contentious element Jerry Jones introduced into negotiations was a distraction but believes owners are unified moving forward. Spoke to Jones & Houston’s Bob McNair by phone last week.”

That was backed up by Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram.

“Arthur Blank said Jerry Jones had no impact in Roger Goodell getting a contract that is 90 percent incentive based and includes oversight by 24-26 owners on various committees,” Hill wrote. “Let’s see what Jones says.”

It will be interesting to see what Jones says, as some of what he wanted – the involvement of more than six owners – is definitely in there. Of course, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. Goodell has his extension. But it will be interesting to note how this information is spun.

For what it’s worth, there were predictions that the meetings would be contentious after everything Jones said. It doesn’t look like that was the case at all.

“Indianapolis owner Jim Irsay on how Jerry Jones conducted himself in today’s NFL meetings. ‘He was a Texas gentleman’,” wrote Moore.
