On Friday afternoon, the San Francisco 49ers released four-time All-Pro linebacker NaVorro Bowman after seven massively productive seasons. While a couple of injuries (knee and achilles) have caused Bowman to lose a step, the former Penn State standout should have his choice of several potential landing spots in the coming days.
The 49ers unsuccessfully (likely because of his contract) attempted to trade Bowman this week after it became clear that rookie Reuben Foster is a rising star and their future at the inside linebacker position.
Bowman will likely find a new home early next week (once the rest of the league gets through their Week 6 games), and our guess is that he will want to sign with a contender. Here is a look at three teams that would be a good fit for the former third-round pick.
The Broncos don’t have a pressing need at inside linebacker with Todd Davis and Brandon Marshall already in the fold. But when it comes down to it, Bowman may be too good for them to pass up. At the very least, he would give Denver some valuable depth at what is arguably the weakest position on their championship-caliber defense.
At 2-3, the time has come for the Cowboys to officially hit the panic button. There is a very real chance that All-Pro running back Ezekiel Elliott could miss the team’s next six games, and their defense is nowhere near strong enough for them to go on a deep postseason run.
Simply put, making a play to add Bowman to their defense should be a no-brainer for the Cowboys.
New England Patriots
The struggles of the Patriots’ defense in 2017 have been well-documented. Bowman could come in and promptly make a positive impact, and the Pats would offer him an excellent chance at winning a Super Bowl.
Bottom line, the New England defense needs all the help it can get as they prepare to embark on what they hope proves to be another championship run.
The Raiders are off to a disappointing 2-3 start, in large part due to their performance on the defensive side of the ball. Bowman would be an instant upgrade over every inside linebacker on Oakland’s roster, and he would immediately help them improve their run defense, which currently ranks 25th in the league.
Also, it’s worth pointing out that signing with the Raiders would be extremely convenient for Bowman, who has spent his entire NFL career in the Bay Area.
