Drew Pearson: Cowboys can’t waste Dak Prescott like they did Tony Romo

Drew Pearson spent his entire career as a wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys, and he is worried about the team’s current young quarterback, Dak Prescott.

Pearson does not want to hear the criticisms that are being levied against Prescott about his play in recent weeks. Since Ezekiel Elliott began serving his suspension in Week 10, Prescott has completed 64 percent of his passes for 934 yards, 5 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. Also, the Cowboys have lost three of their last four games.

Pearson believes that the problem is the Cowboys need to avoid the mistakes with Prescott that they made with former quarterback Tony Romo.

“Dak is doing the best he can with what he has, and what we’ve got to be careful about with Dak is that we don’t waste him like we wasted a good quarterback like Tony Romo by not putting the right people around him while he’s still effective and doing his thing,” Pearson said on 103.3 FM’s Cowlishaw and Dennis show, via the Dallas Morning News. “Look at Tony’s stats and everything—the games he won coming from behind and all of that – he did that with, I think, limited talent around him, especially on the offensive side of the football. We can’t waste Dak by doing the same thing. We’ve got to get some talent around him and I’m saying that in the receiving corps for sure.”

That is an interesting take from Pearson. While the current Cowboys do lack explosion in their receiving corps, Romo had that for most his career. Terrell Owens was arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL for three years with the Cowboys, and once he wore out his welcome, Dez Bryant was drafted shortly after.

Also, tight end Jason Witten was with the Cowboys for Romo’s entire career. If Pearson’s argument is that the Cowboys didn’t surround Romo with a great defense or running game for most of his career, that is reasonable.

But as of 2017, the Cowboys absolutely do have an aging wide receiver corps, and an offensive line that will need to make changes in the coming years.
