Denver Broncos undecided on starting QB for Week 16 game vs. Redskins

According to head coach Vance Joseph, the Denver Broncos have yet to decide whether Brock Osweiler or Paxton Lynch will be their starting quarterback for their Week 16 game against the Washington Redskins.

“We’ve got two healthy guys there [at quarterback],” Joseph said (via Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post). “We’re going to have a staff meeting on Monday morning and kind of see who’s best for us. Obviously, Paxton being a young guy, we want to see him play more. So that part will have some bearing there. Brock played really well last night. He made some big-time throws, his leadership showed, he played with great poise, he took care of the football. So that’s going to be a long and hard conversation.”

Osweiler took over for Trevor Siemian when the former Northwestern quarterback suffered a season-ending partially dislocated left shoulder in the first quarter of the Broncos 25-13 win over the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday night. And in three-plus quarters of work, the former second-round pick from Arizona State turned in what was arguably the best performance of his six-year NFL career, completing 12-of-17 passes for 194 yards, 2 touchdowns, zero interceptions, and a quarterback rating of 147.7. He also added 17 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.

Based on his performance against the Colts, Osweiler  should be the Broncos’ starter against the Redskins. However, with the team already being eliminated from postseason contention, Denver would be wise to get an extended look at Lynch and see if he has a future with the franchise.

Only time will tell how this situation plays out, but if I were a betting man, I’d put my money on Lynch getting the nod against the Redskins.
