Denver Broncos wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders haven’t had many chances to get involved in Denver’s success this season.
That’s a responsibility that ultimately falls on both Trevor Siemian and them, but solving that problem will require Siemian to bear the brunt of the responsibility.
The Broncos starting quarterback has primarily been focused on not losing football games by protecting the ball and giving the defense and running game the chance to carry the load. And that’s justifiable because that’s exactly the recipe for success that the Broncos need at the moment.
Forcing the ball down the field to get Sanders and Thomas involved saddles the franchise with risk their shoulders aren’t wide enough to handle at the moment. However, those Pro Bowl receivers have the skills to take allow for some compromise in the interest of getting the biggest playmakers Denver has going.
Sanders has the quick-twitch ability necessary to take short, manageable throws and turn them into big plays. And Thomas is an absolute brute to take down in the open field, so he can do similar.
Siemian doesn’t necessarily have to press to get them more looks and, of course, those short throws work in conjunction with the running game to draw defenders into the box. From there, the Broncos can attempt to take advantage of matchups and attack down the field for bigger chunk plays.
However, the only way that works in a way that gives offensive coordinator Mike McCoy the confidence to dial those shots up is if Siemian continues to prove that he’s capable of making the right decision and not forcing the issue simply to prove he can make a play.
Sanders and Thomas also have to do more with the 16 targets a game the pair are already getting to justify more action, as well, but it inevitably all falls back on Siemian. The larger goal is to be smart with the football and the ancillary goal is to get these stars more involved in the offense and it’s his job to find the area in this Venn diagram that overlaps.
