Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas questions crucial pass interference call

After six games, it’s become clear that Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is going to have a difficult time extending his streak of five-straight 1,000-yard receiving seasons to six in 2017.

Against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Thomas caught only 2 passes for a measly 9 yards. He did, however, have an 81-yard reception in the third quarter that was negated by a very questionable offensive pass interference call.

The call wiped out what could have been a potentially game-changing play for Denver’s struggling offense, and Thomas wasn’t pleased about it.

“I don’t think it was a pass interference call to tell you the truth,” Thomas said after the game on Sunday (via Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post). “We got some calls that shouldn’t have been made and some calls that should’ve been made. As a receiver, I can’t do anything. If I tried to stop and catch the ball, the DB would’ve ran into me. I don’t know if they would have 100-percent called that on them, so all I did was move, swipe to my left, which is not pass interference, and they called it. Referees control the game when stuff like that happens. It’s one of the plays that could have helped us out. It didn’t have anything to do with the game, but it was a big play that could’ve helped us and maybe gave us a chance to put points on the board.”

Through Week 7, Thomas, a two-time All-Pro, has 30 receptions for 389 yards and zero touchdowns. Moreover, he has only one game with double-digit targets, and he has two games where he was held to 11 or fewer receiving yards.

Thomas’ dip in production is a direct reflection of the Broncos’ offensive struggles as a whole.

First off, he plays a dependent position. With quarterback Trevor Siemian struggling mightily, the declining production from their rushing attack, the ankle injury to fellow wideout Emmanuel Sanders, and the poor play of Denver’s offensive line, it has become increasingly difficult for the Broncos to get the ball to Thomas on a consistent basis.

If things don’t turn around in a hurry, Thomas will likely have his worst statistical season since becoming a full-time starter in 2012.
