Dragons drop series opener to Timber Rattlers

The Dragons couldn’t overcome a big early deficit and dropped the opener of a three-game minor-league baseball series to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Appleton, Wisconsin, 6-4 on Wednesday night.

Dayton trailed 6-1 before scoring three runs in the eighth inning to account for the final margin.

Austin Orewiler (3-3), the Dragons starting pitcher, was tagged with the loss. He went six innings and allowed five runs and nine hits. Hendrik Clementina pounded his 12th home run. Alejo Lopez and Clementina each had two hits.

The Dragons (43-51 overall, 12-14 second half) play the Timber Rattlers (Brewers) at 8 p.m. Thursday. Hamilton High School graduate and former Sinclair Community College pitcher Patrick McGuff (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is scheduled to start for Dayton. He won his debut last Saturday, going five innings in a 1-0 defeat of visiting Kane County (Diamondbacks).

Dayton is one game behind in the Class A Midwest League East Division second-half wildcard race.

The Dragons (Reds) next home game is Wednesday, July 25 against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) at Fifth Third Field.
