Dayton goes cold in final minutes, suffers first A-10 loss of season at VCU

Marcus Evans hits big shot in the final minute for Rams

Virginia Commonwealth outscored the Dayton Flyers 11-2 in the last four minutes to win 76-71 at the Siegel Center on Wednesday.

Dayton (11-6, 3-1) saw its six-game winning streak end and fell to 1-4 all time at VCU.

The Flyers led 69-65 after a layup by Jalen Crutcher at the 4:08 mark and then didn’t score again until the final seconds on a layup by Josh Cunningham.

Dayton had the ball in a tie game with just under a minute to play. Ryan Mikesell missed a desperation 3-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer. VCU responded with a go-ahead 3-pointer by Marcus Evans with 33 seconds left and sealed the victory on its next possession with two free throws by Evans.

Jordan Davis led the Flyers with 17 points. Cunningham and Crutcher each scored 13. Evans led the Rams with 19 points.

HALFTIME RECAP

The Flyers outscored Virginia Commonwealth 9-0 in the last 93 seconds to get back in the game Wednesday at the Siegel Center. VCU took a 37-36 lead into halftime.

The Rams led by as many as 11 points in the first half. They had a 37-27 lead after a score by Marcus Santos-Silva at the 2:36 mark but didn’t score again in the half.

Jordan Davis scored four points in the last two minutes for Dayton, and Josh Cunningham had a basket in the final seconds.

Jalen Crutcher and Ryan Mikesell led the Flyers with seven points in the half. Cunningham, Davis and Obi Toppin each scored six.

De’Riante Jenkins led the Rams with eight points. Marcus Evans and Santos-Silva each had six.

VCU made 4 of 9 3-pointers. Dayton made 2 of 8.
