Dayton Flyers outlast St Joe’s; seniors move within one win of record


St. Joseph’s provided a stiffer challenge than expected, hanging around until the final minutes against the Dayton Flyers on Tuesday at UD Arena, but UD hit their free throws and got some big plays from Scoochie Smith to win 77-70.

Star of the game: Kendall Pollard scored 19 points. He had three 3-point plays.

Key stat: Dayton made 15 of 18 free throws (83.3 percent), continuing a recent trend of strong shooting from the foul line.

Big picture: Dayton improved to 18-5 and 9-2 in the A-10. The senior class is one victory away from tying the school record of 97 wins. UD moved a half game ahead of VCU in the conference. The Flyers have a big game Friday at Rhode Island, which beat UMass on Tuesday on the road.

FIRST-HALF RECAP

Short-handed St. Joseph’s gave the Dayton Flyers all they could handle in the first half Tuesday at UD Arena. Playing without two starters, the Hawks tied Dayton 32-32 on a last-second 3-pointer by Lamarr Kimble.

UD’s star: Charles Cooke and Kendall Pollard each have 10 points. They each made 4 of 8 shots.

Hawks star: Kimble scored 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Key stat: The Hawks shot 48.1 percent from the field. Dayton shot 36.1 percent.

Best play: Darrell Davis threw a behind-the-back pass to Kendall Pollard, who dunked to finish off a fast break.
