You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch — Arkansas has a rumored potential next defensive coordinator

Arkansas football rules the world of Razorbacks sports. So, with your bacon, have some Hogs for Breakfast and get caught up. It’s SEC Country’s weekday column and roundup on all things Arkansas … especially Arkansas football. Opinion, numbers, inane babble and more! And now with ironic exclamation points! There is no place like it on the web.

If you’re a regular around here for Breakfast, you may recall a little piece a few weeks back. It basically told the University of Arkansas to make it stop when it came to making a coaching hire. Wasn’t anything the university itself was lagging on, necessarily, but more how the cavalcade of potential names for the Hogs’ head coaching job was becoming a headache.

We’re almost to that point now with the defensive coordinator gig.

The latest name to surface as a distinct possibility is Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch. Grinch is familiar with the SEC, having previously coached the Missouri secondary before becoming defensive coordinator in Pullman, Wash. He would also fit the coaching staff’s general age bracket as Grinch is younger than 40. Most of new head coach Chad Morris’ assistants are not yet 40.

Far more important than age and previous SEC experience as a position coach, however, are Grinch’s numbers at Wazzu. They’re impressive. When Grinch arrived to Washington State, the Cougars were giving up 442 yards a game. This season, his defense is allowing an average of 313 each time out. That number improved every season, too. It wasn’t just some random, one-off jump to second in the Pac-12.

Who knows, though. As stated before, this is called Silly Season for a reason. Bears watching.

C.J. Jones is a future star

Jaylen Barford we know about. Daryl Macon we knew about. Anton Beard has been around three seasons. Daniel Gafford is the most decorated in-state product since Bobby Portis.

They’re all good players. Some great.

But the key to the early-season success, especially recently, has been sophomore C.J. Jones. The instant-offense shooter has been exactly that after showing flashes his freshman season. Jones gives Arkansas five players who average double figures scoring and he’s at almost 50 percent beyond the arc.

If his game continues to develop, if he bulks up and starts to get to the paint like his body type suggests he will soon be able to, watch out. This Arkansas team is already good. It might become great sooner rather than later.

Tweets and the like

Arkansas needs offensive linemen and everyone knows it. The Hogs’ new offensive line coach is up in the Midwest recruiting.

Just a little something to back-up the excitement recommended above regarding Arkansas basketball.

They call him Intern Frank. He will be missed. Mostly by Bo Mattingly and that show. Ha.

See y’all after Christmas.

Skip Breakfast? C’mon. It’s too important. Catch up with previous versions here.
