Wisconsin-Michigan State basketball preview
Wisconsin is coming off a 70-64 victory at Northwestern on Thursday night. It marked the Badgers’ third consecutive win in Big Ten play.
Badgers forward Ethan Happ led the team with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals. But it was the play of little-used reserve forward Andy Van Vliet that really stood out. Van Vliet scored 14 points and buried 4 3-pointers against Northwestern’s zone. He played a season-high 24 minutes. Van Vliet, who opened the season as a starter, lost his starting spot after four games. He had not played more than 6 minutes in a game since Nov. 20.
Wisconsin’s Khalil Iverson continued his strong play of late, scoring 16 points and grabbing 6 rebounds. Iverson is averaging 9.3 rebounds per game over his last three contests. Badgers guard Brevin Pritzl added 11 points against Northwestern and connected on a trio of 3-pointers. That was notable because Pritzl missed all 11 of his field-goal attempts, including 9 3-pointers, in Wisconsin’s first matchup against Northwestern on Feb. 1.
Wisconsin is still two games under .500 and likely will finish the season with a losing record for the first time in 20 years. But Wisconsin’s ability to persevere through a difficult season has to be encouraging as the Badgers build toward the future. Wisconsin defeated No. 6 Purdue on Feb. 15, responded with a strong performance against border rival Minnesota on Monday and then won only its third road game in Big Ten play against Northwestern on Thursday.
If the Badgers peak at the right time, they could even make a run in the Big Ten Tournament. It’s a long shot, of course, but stranger things have happened. Wisconsin has played well enough to avoid playing on the first day of the Big Ten Tournament as one of the four worst seeds.
Badgers point guard Brad Davison, who is averaging 11.5 points per game, is in rare company as a double-digit scorer in his rookie campaign. Over the last 20 years, Devin Harris, Alando Tucker and Happ are the only Badgers to average double figures in points during their freshman seasons. But Davison has been forced to carry a heavy burden without injured guards D’Mitrik Trice and Kobe King. Davison also has been hampered by a left shoulder injury that limits his mobility.
No. 2 Michigan State is coming off an 81-61 victory against Illinois and is one of the hottest teams in the country. The Spartans have won 11 consecutive games to take over first place in the Big Ten. Michigan State is 27-3 overall, including 15-2 in Big Ten play.
Miles Bridges leads Michigan State with 17.1 points per game. Nick Ward (13.0 points), Joshua Langford (12.5 points), Cassius Winston (12.3 points) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (11.4 points) also average double figures in scoring.
Michigan State defeated Wisconsin 76-61 in the teams’ first matchup on Jan. 26. Bridges led all scorers with 24 points in that game, while Happ paced Wisconsin with 23 points.
