Wisconsin-Marquette basketball preview

Wisconsin’s early-season struggles continued during a 59-55 loss at Temple on Wednesday. Forward Ethan Happ scored 23 points, but no other Badgers player reached double figures. The Badgers also connected on only 5 of 20 3-pointers. Wisconsin didn’t score over the final 3:27.

Wisconsin is 4-6 for the first time since former coach Bo Ryan’s first season in 2001-02. That team rallied to finish 19-13, earn a tie for first place in the Big Ten and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The team this year appears to have an even more uphill climb.

In the last few games, Badgers coach Greg Gard has not played three frontcourt players who were expected to be key contributors this season: Andy Van Vliet, Charlie Thomas and Alex Illikainen. Wisconsin instead burned the redshirt of freshman big man Nate Reuvers after five games. Reuvers scored 2 points on 1 of 5 shooting in 12 minutes against Temple, but he had scored in double figures in his previous two games.

Happ leads Wisconsin this season at 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Brad Davison is averaging 10 points per game after ascending into the starting lineup earlier this season. Davison leads the Badgers with 19 steals. D’Mitrik Trice is third on the team in scoring (9.4 points), followed by Khalil Iverson (7.5 points) and Brevin Pritzl (6.4 points).

Marquette is 6-3 this season and is coming off a 91-81 victory against Vermont. Markus Howard drilled 6 3-pointers and tied a career high with 34 points. Howard leads the team in scoring at 22.4 points per game, and has help from Andrew Rowsey, who is averaging 21.6 points. Sam Hauser is third on the team at 12.9 points per game. Hauser’s younger brother, Joey, is the top-ranked recruit in Wisconsin for the 2018 class and picked Marquette over Wisconsin.

Wisconsin leads the all-time series against Marquette 67-56. The game was first played 100 years ago, when Wisconsin defeated Marquette 15-14 on Dec. 19, 1917. In the 2016 matchup, Wisconsin beat Marquette 93-84.
