Will Grier should be considered one of the top contenders for the Heisman Trophy in 2018, according to Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples.
Grier was having a breakout season before he was sidelined by a broken finger. Staples has Grier as one of 15 way-too-early frontrunners for the award next season if he elects to return for his senior year.
Should Grier and frequent touchdown collaborator David Sills V return for one more season in Morgantown, they could put up some absurd numbers in a wide-open—in every sense of the phrase—Big 12.
If Grier decides to come back, he could be the best quarterback in college football next season. Grier threw for 3,490 yards, 34 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 11 games this year. He would be a strong candidate for the Heisman if he were to build on those numbers and lead the Mountaineers into contention for the Big 12 title in 2018.
It is not clear whether Grier will be available to play in the Heart of Dallas Bowl against Utah. The Mountaineers take on the Utes on Dec. 26 at 1:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
