Oklahoam quarterback Kyler Murray may be taking the field against Texas after Baker Mayfield took a big hit in the third quarter.
A former big-name recruit and Texas A&M quarterback, Murray has spent this season backing up Mayfield.
Here are five things fans should know about Murray.
1. Kyler Murray transferred to Oklahoma from Texas A&M
Murray played in 8 games as a freshman in College Station in 2015, eventually taking over for incumbent starter Kyle Allen. He threw for 686 yards with 5 touchdowns and 7 interceptions that season. He also ran for 335 yards and a touchdown while averaging 6.3 yards per carry. He and Allen both transferred from Texas A&M after that season. Murray joined the Sooners. Allen transferred to Houston, where he is currently the starter.
2. Kyler Murray was a 5-star recruit in high school
When he was at Allen (Texas) High School, Murray was rated as a 5-star recruit and the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback for 2015, according to the 247Sports Composite. Murray was also named Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2014. He was the fifth-ranked player in Texas that year as well. He committed the Aggies over offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Auburn, Clemson, Florida and Notre Dame, among others.
3. Kyler Murray beat out Oklahoma’s old backup for the No. 2 job
Mayfield’s backup in 2016 was Austin Kendall, who played in two games as a freshman. Murray sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules. But this season, he passed Kendall on the depth chart. Kendall is expected to redshirt this season.
4. Kyler Murray is a dual-threat quarterback
Murray struggled as a passer at times with the Aggies, completing just 59.5 percent of his passes and logging a quarterback rating of 109.2. However, he was a very capable runner. Even if Mayfield is healthy for the whole year, Oklahoma is still going to use Murray in some wildcat packages. There has even been talk of utilizing him as a receiver, though that wouldn’t be his primary role.
5. Kyler Murray also plays baseball
The Oklahoma quarterback is also listed as an outfielder on the Sooners’ official baseball roster. In high school, Murray was the first player to ever play in both the Under Armour All-America football and baseball games. He played sparingly for Oklahoma this past season and had a .317 OBP and 12 stolen bases. The baseball team let him miss one game this season to play in the football team’s spring game. Meanwhile, the football team actually let him miss some workouts so he could play in the Cape Cod League over the summer.
“It was a good experience for me. It humbled me a little bit in ways. But the baseball part was lovely,” Murray said of his time playing summer baseball. “Had a great time, saw the best of the best pitchers in the world in the collegiate ranks. It was a great experience for sure.”
