Question of the Day: Wednesday, Feb. 14

It’s Valentine’s Day. And since I’m a sucker for themed articles, you best believe the Question of the Day is going to be a festive one. It was even submitted by my very favorite person: me.

Which player will LSU football fans fall in love with this season?

There is only one ground rule for this post — fans can’t already be in love with the player. That’s way too obvious.

This past season, I think there were four players who fit this bill, making for a love … pentagon?

Sophomore linebacker Devin White, sophomore defensive end Rashard Lawrence, senior wide receiver Russell Gage and redshirt freshman cornerback Greedy Williams became fan favorites in 2017. We saw flashes of potential brilliance from White and Lawrence in their freshman seasons, while Williams’ ascent was a bit more surprising in that we had yet to see him play in a game. Gage may have been the most beloved of all — the veteran role player who turned into a star after a long wait.

Since SEC Country has no laws against polygamy, I believe there will be room in your heart for these players:

Wide receiver Jonathan Giles

The transfer from Texas Tech should become LSU’s first 1,000-yard receiver since Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry did it in 2013. Notice I didn’t say “might.” Barring injury or ineffective quarterback play, he’s got the tools to make it happen. And that’s something fans will love.

Wide receiver Justin Jefferson

One of the reasons Gage became a fan favorite is because he had a knack for being in the right place at the right time. Jefferson seems like the kind of player capable of filling the same role. He was not a heralded recruit — Jefferson didn’t even join the program until three months after Signing Day.

Given his path, he’s the type of player who has to scrap his way onto the field. That trait has grabbed the attention of his coaches, and it will grab the attention of fans, too.

Nose tackle Tyler Shelvin

If there’s anything to be learned from Santa Claus, it’s that people are very fond of big dudes. Think about it: If a skinny guy snuck down your chimney, you’d call the cops. A big guy? He’s jolly. You leave cookies for him.

Shelvin is a very big guy, weighing in around 375 pounds at last check. He’s working to get that weight down by a good 30-40 pounds, but he’ll still be a large man. And, despite that size, an athletic man. He even kicked a field goal in high school.

People will enjoy watching this redshirt freshman.

Outside linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson

We move on to an entirely different body type — the lean, athletic freak.

Chaisson saw plenty of snaps as a freshman due to Arden Key’s injuries, but he was still learning the craft. Much like White and Lawrence before him, I expect Chaisson to elevate his game to the next level as a sophomore. It won’t be surprising, obviously. But you’re still going to love it.
