Where Florida stands with 5-star OG Jamaree Salyer after his official visit

Jamaree Salyer, the nation’s No. 1 offensive guard, took a surprise official visit to Florida this past weekend.

The previous staff offered Salyer a scholarship in the spring of his sophomore year, but the Gators never became a factor in his recruitment. Salyer had interest in visiting Florida for the LSU game, but didn’t make it to campus.

That changed last Friday when Salyer showed up at UF unexpectedly — at least to fans and media. But behind the scenes, Florida had been communicating with Salyer in recent weeks and visited him at Pace Academy in Atlanta.

Gators coach Dan Mullen and assistant John Hevesy made another run at Salyer and convinced him to check out UF before deciding on a school. The early enrollee plans to announce his commitment on Dec. 20.

Salyer has shut down all interviews until he signs early, but SEC Country spoke with sources close to him about where things stand in his recruiting process.

UF went into last weekend with a lot of ground to make up, but Salyer has genuine interest in the Gators. He is impressed with Dan Mullen’s track record and recognizes the need Florida has at his position.

Salyer didn’t want through his recruitment without seeing what Gainesville had to offer.

“Just to kill all doubts in my mind there,” Salyer previously told Dawg Nation when asked why he wanted to Florida. “To go and visit and make sure that I didn’t have a school where I said, ‘Dang, what if I had looked there first?’ So I will take that official. I will make a decision after I come back from there. If I didn’t like it, then I will just tell the coaches about it.”

Simply getting Salyer on campus was a big deal in and of itself. Mullen & Co. have been swinging for the fences on the recruiting trail and targeting some elite prospects, so it’s a positive sign to see those efforts lead to an official visit.

However, sources close to Salyer told SEC Country the trip to Florida wasn’t enough for the Gators to make a major move this late in the game. Salyer enjoyed getting to know Mullen and Hevesy, but his relationship with other coaches are stronger and more established.

Salyer is the No. 10 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings and has taken multiple trips to Clemson, Georgia and Notre Dame throughout the process. The in-state Bulldogs are considered the team to beat in his recruitment and will be hard for any school to surpass.
