Matt Corral flips to Ole Miss
Florida is now searching for a new quarterback in the Class of 2018.
Matt Corral, a top-100 recruit from Long Beach, Calif., flipped his commitment Thursday from the Gators to Ole Miss. He made the move after an in-home visit with Rebels coach Matt Luke and offensive coordinator Phil Longo.
The loss of Corral is a blog blow for the Gators, but his decision didn’t come as a complete shock with the recent developments in his recruitment. The last two weeks have been the most stressful part of the process for him and his family.
Corral committed to in-state Southern Cal after his sophomore season, but re-opened his recruitment six months ago with heavy interest in Alabama, Florida and Georgia. He committed to the Gators on July 22 and didn’t waver on that decision during the coaching change.
However, his pledge began to unravel after the arrival of new UF coach Dan Mullen. He reached out to a few quarterbacks during his first week on the job and seemingly reset Florida’s recruiting board at the position. That started things off on the wrong foot with Corral, who didn’t feel like an immediate priority to the staff.
Ole Miss, meanwhile, put the full-court press on Corral after missing the window to recruit him last summer. The Rebels offered Corral the day before his commitment to Florida and were too late to the party, but the hiring of Mullen gave them new life.
Luke and Longo sold Corral on being a better fit for their offense and they won him over with the way they handled his recruitment. The Ole Miss coaches called Corral and his family consistently and were up front about how he would factor into their depth chart at QB.
Mullen and new quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson visited Corral on Monday and scheduled him for an official visit this weekend. Luke and Longo convinced Corral to cancel that trip and their efforts this month paid off Thursday with his flip to the Rebels.
It wasn’t easy for Corral to back out of his Florida commitment, but he formed a strong bond with the Ole Miss staff and felt that his skill set was more suited for Longo’s system. In the end, recruiting comes to down relationships and being comfortable.
Corral lost his relationships and comfort level with the Gators, so they lost him.
