What Tennessee fans need to know about the early signing period

It might have seemed odd having recruiting in a dead heat in the middle of December this year.

The reason for all the early recruiting news is the inaugural early signing period that begins Wednesday and lasts to Friday.

Coaches around the country will push to get the majority of their commits signed in the early period.

SEC Country projects nine early signees for Tennessee this week from commits in the Class of 2018. The number could change as the new coaching staff under Jeremy Pruitt hope to receive a few early Christmas presents.

Here’s what you need to know about the early signing period:

What is the early signing period?

This is a rule the NCAA put into place back in May. It is a 72-hour time frame for recruits to sign their National Letters of Intent. This moves up the clock from the usual signing day, which is the first Wednesday in February.

This is the first time football has tried an early signing period. It is common in other sports. Basketball, for instance, has a few signing periods throughout the year.

When is the early signing period?

The early signing period begins Wednesday, Dec. 20 and lasts until Friday, Dec. 22.

Most of the action will come on Wednesday. Tennessee commit Alontae Taylor will wait until Friday to sign his papers, though.

Which Tennessee commitments are signing during the early signing period?

The Vols’ class has shrunk significantly over the past few months, and it’s now down to 1o prospects.

Here’s the list of projected early signees:

  • Greg Emerson, 4-star, DE (Jackson, Tenn.)
  • Alontae Taylor, 4-star, WR (Manchester, Tenn.)
  • Brant Lawless, 4-star, DT (Nashville, Tenn.)
  • Matthew Flint, 3-star, OLB (Gurley, Ala.)

  • Tanner Antonutti, 3-star OT (Nashville, Tenn.)
  • Ollie Lane, 3-star OG (Corryton, Tenn.)
  • Paxton Brooks, 3-star, P (West Columbia, S.C.)

Which Tennessee commitments aren’t signing during the early signing period?

Two commits haven’t confirmed either way what they will be doing with the early signing period.

  • D’Andre Litaker, 4-star, DT (Nashville, Tenn.)
  • Anthony Grant, 3-star, RB (Buford, Ga.)

Which Tennessee commitments are enrolling early?

Most of the class plans to be early enrollees as well. Each prospect taking part in the early signing period will be enrolled early.
