What Ole Miss fans need to know about the early signing period

The Ole Miss Rebels can add a number of players from their recruiting class of 2018 to their roster when the early signing period begins on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Matt Luke, recently officially promoted to be the Rebels’ permanent head coach, has a tough task ahead of him. The Rebels are now under heavy sanctions from the NCAA, resulting in transfers from prominent players within the program as well as de-commitments.

However, if some talented prospects take the same attitude as star Rebels wideout A.J. Brown, then Luke and his staff will be feeling a whole lot better after the early signing period.

According to 247Sports, with 11 commits in the class of 2018, Ole Miss’s incoming class currently ranks last (14th) in the SEC and 69th in the country.

Here’s everything you need to know about Ole Miss recruiting as the early signing period arrives:

What is the early signing period?

The early signing period is a three-day stretch of time during which recruits in the class of 2018 can sign their National Letters of Intent to the school of their choice. The early signing period makes its debut this year, whereas in all previous years, high school prospects had to wait until National Signing Day in early February to sign their letters of intent. Now prospects who are committed to a school can sign, allowing their recruitments to end while also allowing college coaches to focus on remaining uncommitted target prospects.

When is the early signing period?

The early signing period takes place from Wednesday, Dec. 20 through Friday, Dec. 22, 2017.

Which Ole Miss commitments are signing during the early signing period?

View a list of all of the Rebels 2018 recruiting commitments here. Of the 11 Rebels commits, 247Sports does not list any as signing during the early signing period, although that does not prevent some or all from doing so. But this is not a huge surprise, given the NCAA sanctions. The young players likely will want to take the time to evaluate the effects of the sanctions, review all of their offers, and take visits prior to National Signing Day in February.

Which Ole Miss recruits are announcing during the early signing period?

Here is a list of Ole Miss’s top remaining targets in the 2018 class. Those targets who will announce during the early signing period are:

  • Jerome Carvin, 4-star OT,  Cordova, Tenn. — Mississippi State is also a major player for this prospect
  • Anthony Cook, 4-star CB,  Houston.

Which Ole Miss commitments aren’t signing during the early signing period?

As Matt Luke attempts to hold his class together, while no commits are scheduled by 247Sports to sign during the early signing period, there are indications that the Rebels will be relatively OK in February.

Earlier this month, Ole Miss scored a strong in-state commitment from 3-star safety Cameron White.

Which Ole Miss commitments are enrolling early?

None of the Rebels 2018 recruiting commits are currently scheduled to enroll early.
