Baylor coach Matt Rhule remained upbeat even in the midst of his team’s biggest margin of defeat this season.
The Bears stumbled to a 59-16 loss Saturday at No. 14 Oklahoma State for their sixth straight loss to start the season.
Here’s a compilation of some of the comments Rhule made to the Baylor radio network after the game:
Matt Rhule’s post-game comments after the Oklahoma State game:
On Baylor’s early scoring drive that gave them a brief lead: “I was pleased with the way the kids started. With 9 minutes left in the first half it was a 14-10 ballgame and we let it get away from us. We played with good energy. These kids care.”
On getting Charlie Brewer some playing time late in the game: “I thought (Baylor quarterback Zach Smith) was out competing, but he was getting banged up. We tried to get Charlie some reps. I thought Charlie was a bright spot. He was flew around and that was a positive.”
On Baylor’s running game: “Lovett was hot early and then he got banged up. Terence (Williams) came in and did a nice job and then he banged up his shoulder. It was the best running performance we’ve had. That was the most whole we’ve looked at running this year.
On the game: “I just thought Oklahoma State was a lot better than us today. At halftime we asked them if we could compete. I thought our kids showed some resolve, While it didn’t end up the way we wanted, we competed and fought. I was proud of the effort in the second half. We keep playing, even though the score wasn’t what we wanted.”
On what Oklahoma State did to stop Baylor’s passing game: “They played 3-down fronts and were determined not to let Mims hurt them. He was sick and feeling well today. They did a nice job of taking away the pass. The score got away quick and we weren’t able to make plays we wanted to make.”
On the kicking of walk-on kickoff specialist Jay Sedwick: “I’m proud of Jay. He was on the Baylor line for the first game of the season and today he was kicking and making tackles. In the midst of disappointment, there are great stories. He was watching games from his dorms earlier this season and now he’s kicking for us.”
