It may have taken longer than he had hoped, but Ole Miss interim coach Matt Luke now can count himself among those who have won a SEC football game as a head coach.

The Rebels beat Vanderbilt in convincing fashion on Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, running up 57 points on the Commodores.

In the moments following the victory, SEC Network’s Olivia Harlan chased Luke down on the field to get his initial reaction.

“I’m just so happy for these kids,” Luke said. “They’ve been through so much. To see them fight back through all the adversity they’ve had– it’s just special to see them out here having fun. It’s great for our fans, because they’ve been through it too. It’s just good for some positive stuff to start happening.

Harlan asked about his feelings about getting the team overcoming the program’s adversity from the perspective of a former Ole Miss player and long-time assistant.

“I think anytime that you can bounce back, it’s good,” Luke said. “I think finally we’ve got some positive momentum. We’ve just got to capitalize on it moving forward.”

Matt Luke moved to 3-0 at home on the season.
