What Kentucky fans need to know about early signing period

Kentucky has 21 commitments in its 2018 recruiting class, and coach Mark Stoops and his staff hope to secure most of their signatures during the early signing period this week.

Kentucky’s 2018 class is ranked 25th nationally and eighth in the SEC, according to 247Sports composite rankings.

Here’s everything you need to know about college football’s early signing period and how it will affect the Wildcats:

What is the early signing period?

High school prospects can sign their National Letters of Intent in December rather than wait until the first Wednesday in February — known to college football fans as National Signing Day.

An NCAA council, in the spring, approved the 72-hour early signing period.

The early signing period will give coaching staffs a better understanding of where they stand with certain prospects.

When is the early signing period?

The early signing period begins on Wednesday, Dec. 20 and runs until Friday, Dec. 22. Most prospects who plan on signing early will likely do so Wednesday rather than wait until Thursday or Friday.

Which Kentucky commitments are signing during the early signing period?

Kentucky recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow recently said it’d be “pretty good” if 80 percent of the class signs during the early signing period. That equates to about 17 of Kentucky’s commits signing early.

Several of Kentucky’s top commitments are expected to sign on Wednesday, including 3-star junior college quarterback Terry Wilson, 3-star cornerback Stanley Garner and 3-star safety DeAndre Square. All three of those prospects are also expected to be early enrollees.

Expect the majority of Kentucky’s class to sign Wednesday.

Which Kentucky commitments aren’t signing during the early signing period?

It’s unclear which prospects will wait until February to sign.

Which Kentucky commitments are enrolling early?

Five commitments are expected to enroll in January, according to 247Sports:

  • 3-star CB Stanley Garner (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.)
  • 3-star S DeAndre Square (Detroit)
  • 3-star QB Terry Wilson (Garden City, Kan.)
  • 3-star athlete Ashtan Pierre (Deerfield Beach, Fla.)
  • 3-star CB Domonique Williams (Highland, Kan.)
