What does Iowa wrestling legend Dan Gable think about the Fight for Iowa video?

ANSWER: Less than 15 minutes before the whistle sounds and wrestling commences before an Iowa dual, the overhead lights fade out at Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the center video board airs a promotional video that forces the bustling crowd to pause and watch.

A cellist plays the Metallica song, One, as legendary Iowa wrestling coach Dan Gable opens the video with the phrase, “A tradition that stands alone.” Gable then speaks, the cello continues to play and Iowa wrestling highlights continue to roll.

“We wrestle to be the best. We wrestle for championships. We wrestle for Iowa.”

Then the tempo speeds up. So does the intensity, both in Gable’s voice and the wrestling montage.

“It’s time to fight. It’s time to fight for Iowa.”

By the time the bow rips apart the strings for the final note, the arena is sent into a frenzy.

Gable won 15 national titles in 21 years as Iowa’s coach. A statue of his likeness stands in front of Carver-Hawkeye Arena. He’s the greatest coach in wrestling history and arguably in any sport.

He also enjoyed making the video.

“Yeah that wasn’t hard,” Gable said after Iowa’s final home dual this year. “I didn’t do all the editing, all the cutting. I just did one 5-minute talk. It was easy. I walked in and I read it a few times and it was good. I like it.

“I think we have a lot of good things to draw people in besides the wrestling. That’s what I like. The No. 1 thing should be the wrestling; sometimes you add a little drama. It’s good.

“I got animated, but then they made me look more animated because you can tear it down and add crazy stuff going on.”

As far as pre-game videos go, there are few — perhaps none — better than this one. Of course, there’s no one better than Gable, either.
