What Illinois coach Lovie Smith said after 35-24 loss to Rutgers

Illinois entered its Saturday contest against Rutgers at 2-3 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play. Once the game at home concluded, the Fighting Illini are still winless in conference after suffering a 35-24 defeat to the Scarlet Knights.

Despite quarterback Jeff George Jr. throwing for 308 yards, Rutgers owned a lead in the game throughout its entirety. At halftime, the Scarlet Knights led 21-10 and then both teams scored two touchdowns apiece in the second half.

Illinois is now 2-4 on the season and has a game at Minnesota on Oct. 21. The game is set for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff and will be televised on BTN.
