What Frank Martin said after the Coastal Carolina win

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina basketball coach Frank Martin met with reporters after the Gamecocks 80-78 win over Coastal Carolina on Saturday at Colonial Life Arena.

Here’s what the Gamecocks coach had to say, after the team improved its record to 8-2.

On the team’s makeup

“I don’t like their approach right now. We’ve got to change that. We’ve got a lot of new guys in there. It’s never their fault. That’s why I was very clear when I sat here — I’m in a good mood today, I was not in a good mood last week. What did I say? It’s my fault. I didn’t say it’s the players’ fault. I didn’t say it’s the fans’ fault. I said it was the marketing department’s fault. It’s my fault. I messed this up and we’ll fix it. How long is that going to take? I have no idea. I like the team. I like the guys in the locker room.”

Struggling on-ball defense

“It was pretty clear today. I told the guys in the timeout, ‘I’m not playing zone. I don’t care if we lose. I’m not playing zone. You guys are going to learn how to take ownership and guard the ball. Figure out a way to get some courage in you and not cheat, not get sideways, not lunge, not reach, all the negative stuff you can do, defensively. Figure out a way to guard the ball. I’m not doing it.’ The only time we played zone was baseline, out-of-bounds, which we play zone 80 percent of the time. The rest of the game was straight man and I wasn’t getting out of it. We need to learn to have some discipline and courage. If I tried to play zone, to bail us out to win today, we don’t learn. We’re going to learn.”
