What coach Butch Jones said after Tennessee’s 15-9 loss to South Carolina

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tennessee had a chance to defeat South Carolina on the final play of the game, but came up short.

South Carolina topped the Vols 15-9 Saturday. Gamecocks coach Will Muschamp moves to 6-0 against the Vols in his career.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones addressed the media after the loss.

Here is what coach Jones said following the game:

  • Opening statement: Really proud of our players. We had a chance to win the ballgame but came up short. In red zone offense, we have to score touchdowns. Situational football, those types of things. I’m proud of our players, but they showed their character.
  • On Jarrett Guarantano: He made some plays with his legs. He showed poise on that last drive. I’m encouraged with how he played.
  • On lack of big plays: We have to make big splash plays against a defense like that, and we didn’t. We just have to keep working.
  • On running the ball: We ran the ball effectively in the first half. In the second half, we were not able to run the football. When you become one-dimensional, it becomes hard to win.
