West Virginia fans were in a cantankerous mood after the Mountaineers’ narrow 38-36 victory over Baylor.
Their reaction was understandable considering the Mountaineers almost coughed up a 25-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The victory was preserved only after a dramatic sack on a game-tying two-point conversion by senior middle linebacker Xavier Preston with 17 seconds left.
Here’s a sampling of West Virginia fans had to say. Comments were edited for clarity, grammar and context.
Fans’ comments after West Virginia-Baylor game:
Justin Liller: “ Glad to get the win but (West Virginia athletic director Jake) Spavital needs to work on 4-minute offense play calling. That game was a lot more interesting than it needed to be.”
Jim Parker; “(The West Virginia) d efense needs some serious help.”
James Aliucci: “ Whew.”
Jared Rumer: “ Good Grief!!!”
Steve Cappellari: “O ther than the win, nothing positive came from this game. WVU has to be the most undisciplined football team in the nation. What a sloppy game.”
Gary M Davis: “I t’s hard for the D to make a tackle when they are held on every play and it’s not called. And how the hell does the defense get a delay of game penalty ? Never seen that.”
Joe Moynihan: “ Never have I felt a win like a loss as I did tonight. At the WVU watch party I was at, nobody wanted to sing ‘Country Roads … and we didn’t.'”
Aaron Shamblin: “H olgs is terrible. He’s an OC, not an HC. He’s still making rookie mistakes in his 7th season. One of the worst fourth-quarter coaches I’ve ever seen. Year after year, hiking with over 10+ seconds left on play clock play after play, running no huddle in the 4th (quarter) with a lead, throwing with a big lead. If someone doesn’t get in his ear about fundamentals, were never going anywhere.”
Jason Mazza: “ Should have let Petteway and McKoy pound the ball over the last 4 minutes but Spavital wants to throw it. Is Crawford hurt?”
Bruce Crow: “Q uit blaming officials for everything that goes wrong. Holgerson went prevent coverage and damn well should have expected (an) onside kick. Glad for win but we play OU and Oklahoma State like this, we will get waxed.”
