Washington State coach Mike Leach has never been one to mince words, often giving some of the best quotes in college football. He didn’t disappoint when it came to assessing his team’s woeful performance in a 37-3 loss at California on Friday night.

“We’re a bunch of pathetic frontrunners,” Leach said of the Cougars, who came in ranked eighth in the country after starting 6-0 for the first time since 2001. “Our guys just sauntered around on the field like…we’d accomplished something, which is false.”
WSU turned it over seven times, with quarterback Luke Falk throwing five interceptions while getting sacked on nine occasions. The Cougars failed to score a touchdown for he first time since a 19-6 loss to Oregon State in October 2012.
Leach said he thought he and his coaching staff had done a good job of preparing the team for higher expectations after jumping into the Top 10 this past week.
“We had all kinds of determined expressions on our faces, said all the right things,” Leach said. “We didn’t get the message delivered and they didn’t receive it. Way too much listening to the noise.”
