WATCH: USC releases ‘Star Wars’ themed hype video to open second half of season

Sam Darnold isn’t exactly leading the rebellion against the Galactic Empire, but he is trying to help USC overcome a loss and still make the College Football Playoff.

That sounds like it merits a fresh hype video.

Star Wars has long been a series about destiny, rivalry and close ties, which sounds kind of like conference play, chock full of gridiron battles waged with greater ambitions (the CFP) on the mind. Who knew billion-dollar sci-fi epics and Pac-12 football were so similar?

USC’s remaining slate includes Utah, Notre Dame (ah yes, there’s the de facto Galactic Empire, or perhaps the since-collapsed Old Empire in recent years), Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado, and the greatest of Trojan foes, UCLA. The two rivals even make an early appearance in the video. And did you know Darnold’s arm isn’t a cannon, but a lightsaber?

The video revolves around the Trojans fulfilling their destiny. A loss to Washington State didn’t help, but with a strong finish and a conference title (and some outside maneuvering in the top 10), USC is still in play to reach the ultimate goal. A shot of the Pac-12 title in the video makes destiny seem like a conference crown, but we know the Trojans are aiming for more than that.
